Operational Security

Operational security means ensuring that the system is stable and resistant to any unexpected inputs, be it malicious or plain mistakes. To achieve this, advanced input and output validation and filters should be employed. Even the best AI model may react in unexpected ways, when given malformed input data, and validation is the best prevention strategy.

Transparency and Explainability

Transparency and explainability are both connected, building trust in the system, and indirectly impacting its security. These issues are a major concern for many current AI systems, as opaque and monolithic models seem to be the norm. Such systems are not suited for any medical application, simply because you have no way of understanding how they arrived at the solution. In healthtech this is simply unacceptable—understanding what led to the decision or diagnosis is almost as crucial as the output itself.

Transparent AI aims to provide tools enabling tracking its inner workings, understanding what led to the decision, resulting in explainable systems. Of course, ensuring those qualities may be difficult for some types of AI or ML models, but this should lead you to consider, should they be used at all—there are always many alternative AI models, some more suited for such sensitive systems than others.

Despite the evolving landscape, we can point to key principles that should drive any AI system ready for medical applications: robust data security and operational safeguards providing the foundation, transparency and explainability building trust and enabling better system performance, and above all, meaningful human oversight.
