"I can't remember if I took my pill this morning."
Mrs. Johnson takes seven different pills every day. Some with breakfast, others at night, and one only on Mondays and Thursdays. When her doctor added another medication with a different schedule, keeping track became overwhelming.
She's not alone. Nearly half of all patients struggle to take their medications as prescribed - a problem Egis wanted to solve. The pharmaceutical company approached Momentum with a specific goal: create an intuitive app that would help patients like Mrs. Johnson manage their medications without the mental burden of remembering complex schedules.
Together, we built Egis Czas na Lek - not just another reminder app, but a complete medication management tool that organizes schedules, delivers reliable notifications, and helps patients share accurate information with their doctors. The solution targets a problem that costs healthcare systems billions while causing unnecessary suffering when treatments don't deliver their intended benefits.
The pill tracking problem nobody had solved
"A missed pill can mean a trip to the hospital for some patients," explained Egis's project lead at our first meeting. This wasn't just about convenience - it was about health outcomes, and possibly even lives.
While the concept seemed straightforward, our discovery phase revealed several complex challenges that would make or break the application's effectiveness:
Diverse Medication Schedules
No two prescription regimens look alike. Some medications need to be taken with food, others on an empty stomach. Some are taken at specific times, others "as needed." We needed to accommodate everything from simple once-daily pills to complex biweekly injections with specific timing requirements.
Reliable Notification System
A reminder that fails to appear is worse than no reminder at all, as it breaks user trust. Battery optimization settings, different device manufacturers, and varying notification permissions made this particularly tricky - yet it was the app's most critical feature.
Bridging the Technology Gap
Many patients who need medication management most are elderly or less tech-savvy. An overly complicated interface would defeat the entire purpose, regardless of how powerful the underlying functionality might be.

Five things that had to work perfectly
We needed to focus on what would actually make a difference, not just what would look impressive in a feature list. After workshops with Egis and conversations with potential users, we narrowed our objectives to five key goals:
Build a system flexible enough to handle any medication schedule a doctor might prescribe, while keeping setup simple enough that anyone could use it without frustration.
Create notifications that actually work - every time, on every device, even with aggressive battery optimization - because people's health depends on it.
Design an interface so intuitive that someone who struggles with technology could pick it up and use it immediately, without a manual or tutorial.
Include educational content that helps patients understand why their medications matter and how they work, with special resources for breast cancer and rheumatoid arthritis patients.
Make it easy for patients to share accurate medication adherence data with their doctors, closing the loop between prescriptions and real-world use.
Testing with 70-year-olds, not 20-something developers
Building an application for medication management required a thoughtful, user-centered approach that prioritized reliability, simplicity, and accessibility. We knew from the start that to create a truly impactful solution, we needed to go beyond just building features—we had to understand the daily lives and challenges of our users, and design an experience that would seamlessly integrate into their routines.
Understanding User Needs
We began by immersing ourselves in the world of medication management, particularly for those with complex schedules. Through extensive user research and feedback, we identified the key features that would make Egis Czas na Lek an indispensable tool for managing health.
Designing for Accessibility
Given the diverse user base, we put accessibility at the forefront of our design process. Our UX/UI team crafted a clean, straightforward interface with large buttons, clear text, and intuitive navigation to minimize user errors and ensure ease of use for all age groups.
Developing a Robust Notification System
Recognizing that the app's success hinged on its ability to deliver timely reminders, we developed a notification management system capable of handling complex dosing schedules with precision and reliability, capable of handling complex dosing patterns.
Integrating Educational Content
To support users in understanding their medications and treatments, we incorporated educational materials directly into the app. This feature provides easy access to valuable materials, with special resources for breast cancer and rheumatoid arthritis patients.
Iterative Testing and Refinement
Throughout the development process, we conducted regular testing sessions with potential users. This iterative approach allowed us to continuously refine the app's functionality and design, ensuring it met the needs of its target audience.
Tech choices that wouldn't let patients down
Technology choices can make or break a healthcare app. We didn't want the latest shiny tools - we needed proven, reliable technologies that would work for everyone, every time.
Flutter
Flutter gave us the ability to build for both iOS and Android from a single codebase. This wasn't just about efficiency (though it did cut development time by 40%) - it meant we could ensure the exact same reliable experience whether someone used an iPhone or Android device. When someone's health is on the line, consistency matters.
Local-First Architecture
We made a deliberate choice to keep all user data on their device rather than in the cloud. This eliminated internet connectivity as a potential point of failure, ensured the app would work anywhere (even in hospital settings with poor reception), and added an extra layer of privacy for sensitive medical information.
Custom Notification Engine
Off-the-shelf notification systems wouldn't cut it for something this critical. We built a custom solution with redundancy mechanisms and device-specific optimizations to ensure notifications would break through even the most aggressive battery-saving settings.
From whiteboard to working prototype in six weeks
Bringing Egis Czas na Lek from concept to reality involved a series of carefully planned and executed steps. Each feature was developed with the end-user in mind, ensuring that the app not only met its functional requirements but also provided a seamless and intuitive user experience.
Comprehensive Medication Management
We developed a comprehensive medication management system allowing users to input detailed medication schedules, including name, dosage, frequency, and timing. The app's flexibility supports a wide range of dosing patterns, accommodating various medical needs.
Reliable Notification System
At the core of the app is its notification system, meticulously designed and rigorously tested to ensure users receive accurate and timely reminders for their medications. The app's interface was crafted with simplicity and accessibility in mind—large buttons, clear text, and an intuitive layout make it easy for users of all ages and tech-savviness levels to navigate and manage their medication schedules.
Educational Resources
We integrated a "Guide" section into the app, providing valuable educational materials to help users better understand their medications and treatment plans. Special attention was given to resources for breast cancer and rheumatoid arthritis patients.
Medication Intake Reporting
For better health tracking, we implemented features for generating monthly medication intake reports and visualizing adherence through a calendar view. These tools facilitate better communication between patients and healthcare providers.
When Android manufacturers try to kill your notifications
In the development of Egis Czas na Lek, we encountered several significant challenges that tested our technical skills and problem-solving abilities. These obstacles ranged from complex technical issues to user experience considerations, each requiring a unique approach to overcome.
Complex Medication Schedules
Managing various dosing patterns required a flexible and robust system. We overcame this by developing a notification system capable of handling different schedules and delivering accurate reminders.
Ensuring Accessibility
Designing an app that was easy to use for seniors and those less familiar with technology was a priority. Through extensive user testing and iterative design, we created an interface that was both simple and effective.
Offline Functionality
Implementing full functionality without relying on a backend database presented its own set of challenges. We overcame these by leveraging local storage capabilities and optimizing data management within the app.
"User feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, with the application facilitating more consistent adherence to medication schedules, as intended. The simplicity of the interface has made it particularly valuable for our older users who previously struggled with technology."
"I haven't missed a pill in months"
When measuring success, we didn't just look at download numbers - we looked at real health impact. And the numbers tell the story:
After three months, 50% of users over 65 were still actively using the app - an extraordinary retention rate for this demographic. Even more telling, users with complex medication regimens (3+ medications) reported a 41% improvement in adherence, meaning they were actually taking their medications as prescribed rather than missing doses.
"I used to forget my evening pills at least twice a week," one user told us during follow-up research. "Now I haven't missed one in months."
The report generation feature transformed doctor visits. Rather than trying to remember which medications they'd taken, patients could show accurate records. Several physicians reached out unprompted to tell us how valuable this was for adjusting treatment plans.
Perhaps most importantly, the offline-first approach meant the app worked reliably everywhere - in areas with poor connectivity, during hospital stays where WiFi might be restricted, and for users who didn't always have data plans. When someone's health depends on an app, it simply can't fail.
What happens when you solve the right problem
The success of the initial release has opened doors for meaningful expansion. Rather than adding features for the sake of features, we're focusing on enhancements that will make a real difference:
Egis is now exploring smartwatch integration, acknowledging that a subtle wrist vibration may be more effective than a phone notification in certain situations. We're also developing expanded analytics for healthcare providers who want deeper insights into adherence patterns.
Perhaps most excitingly, user feedback has sparked development of peer support communities for specific conditions, allowing patients to share experiences and motivation - all while maintaining the app's core simplicity that made it successful in the first place.
The philosophy remains the same: solve real problems, keep it simple, and never compromise on reliability.
